Repair Works to Watt Street Bridge

Repair Works to Watt Street Bridge

19th of August, 2022

Lancashire County Council is planning works to Watt Street Bridge in Sabden. The bridge carries Watt Street over Sabden Brook (nearest postcode BB7 9EA) and is located immediately south of the junction between Watt Street and Whalley Road.
Why are the works required?
Inspections have identified some structural issues with the masonry arch which require remedial action. Also, an assessment of the footways has identified that they are understrength and bollards have therefore been added previously to prevent vehicle loading.
What does the work involve?
The safety of the existing footways will be improved by removing the bollards and installing higher kerbs with a metal rail which will act as an improved vehicle barrier. The masonry arch will be strengthened by placing lightweight concrete over the distressed area of the arch to help better distribute the traffic loads
When?
A 3-way traffic light system will be in place on Watt St and Whalley Road from 19th September 2022 until 28th October 2022 to help with the works.
The works will take place on one side of the bridge and then switch to the other side so that one footpath and one traffic lane will remain open during the works.
